Programme:

John Adams:  Eros Piano
Franz Liszt: ‘Les Preludes’ Symphonic Poem

Beethoven: Piano Concerto Nr 5 ‘The Emperor Concerto’

Piano: Jan Bartos
Conductor: David Robert Coleman

Contemporary American minimalist composer John Adams wrote his meditative piano concerto ‘Eros Piano’ in 1989. The work incorporates jazz harmonies and influences of, for instance, Bill Evans. Franz Liszt, the most famous piano virtuoso of the nineteenth century, wrote his dramatic and grandiose symphonic poem along the lines of a poem by Lamartine. The concert ends with another piano concerto, Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ concerto. The most popular of Beethoven’s five concerti, ‘The Emperor’ enchants the listener with it’s heroic Eb major harmonies and, in the middle movement, intense lyricism. The work was premiered in 1811 by the Archduke Rudolph at the piano in the Lobkowitz Palais Vienna.

Described by the international press as “one of the best European pianists” and “an emotional and sophisticated interpreter”, his recordings for Supraphon of Mozart Piano concerti with the Czech Philharmonic have received international acclaim by The Times, BBC Music Magazine and Diapason.
